00:00
hey I'm Michael why Shenko the owner and
00:03
founder of the art publishing house lost
00:05
alphabet and I am starting a vlog I want
00:09
to share with you guys about the life of
00:12
an hour publisher what are the things
00:15
that I spend my day on how do I invest
00:19
my energy my time what does it take to
00:22
be entrepreneur in the art field and to
00:27
do something where you're collaborating
00:29
with people from all around the world
00:30
and working on really exciting projects
00:33
and selling our hand to hand with people
00:36
and that's really what this blog is
00:39
about and so today is March 30th the end
00:44
of 2019 and today was a pretty chill day
00:48
honestly I went to the coffee shop and I
00:52
did some work there - don't normally get
00:54
to to do it's been exciting and I'll
00:58
work you through how I spent my day at
01:00
my time I went and I first off had to
01:06
send some invoices for people who want
01:08
to order books you know it's always kind
01:10
of a pain I have to log into my bank
01:11
account and like send out invoices and
01:15
then wait for them to pay before I send
01:18
out books cuz one of the worst mistakes
01:20
you can make when starting your own
01:22
company is giving your product away
01:24
before people pay don't do that and then
01:28
I spent a lot of time emailing I spend
01:32
an ungodly amount of time emailing
01:34
honestly as an author but it's all
01:36
really exciting things you know for
01:40
example I spent a lot of time emailing
01:42
an author for this book about Iceland
01:46
which is coming out I'm super excited to
01:49
share but we're you know we reading the
01:52
book description here in the beginning
01:53
and we just want to make sure that
01:56
everything is right you know we want to
01:58
make sure that the punctuation is right
02:01
that the formatting is right that we're
02:03
all on the same page and you know it
02:06
takes a lot of time for us to go and
02:09
communicate back and forth because the
02:12
authors in Iceland and that means the
02:13
every time I have to order a proof and
02:16
then I get shipped to my house but I
02:17
mark it up and then I mail it Iceland
02:19
which I did earlier this week and then I
02:22
you know email him saying these are the
02:24
changes I made and we go back and forth
02:26
so I spent some time with that I went
02:31
and spent some time with some other
02:32
authors I fixed the cover for this book
02:36
is coming out soon portals by javelina
02:41
from see where is she from
02:44
she's really cool let's check her out
02:47
huh from Lithuania there's a really dope
02:53
book we have coming out well anyway I
02:56
ordered the proof final proof and it's
02:59
crooked and I was like
03:01
so there's guys my monetization but so I
03:04
had to figure out how to fix that I went
03:09
we just published the pull of Venus by
03:12
Alexander Lee awesome awesome book we
03:16
just published it earlier this week a
03:17
few days ago and I'm you know did some
03:20
back-end stuff at that dealing with
03:21
orders other stuff that I did so I have
03:29
we have two Book Fairs coming up next
03:31
month
03:32
and I've been going crazy trying to
03:33
prepare for that trying to get these
03:34
books outs that we have them and then
03:37
also just trying to make sure that the
03:39
books are there so we have the Exile
03:41
Book Fair in Miami in the beginning of
03:44
April which is awesome great and I
03:47
ordered the books for that because I
03:48
don't just always have like we have like
03:51
30 titles now they don't always have 30
03:53
books here with me and then we went and
03:57
in mid-april we're doing a book fair the
04:02
independent art book fair in LA and it's
04:04
a kind of logistic nightmare because
04:06
it's all the way across the country for
04:08
me so I have to go and mail my books
04:10
there and like order my books and mail
04:12
my books there and make sure that it's
04:14
all coordinated and then I'm giving a
04:17
presentation there my office of giving a
04:19
presentation there so I spent some time
04:21
emailing the director of that
04:23
saying this is what I want my
04:25
presentation to be can you please give
04:27
us this amount of time we'll cover this
04:29
much thank you so much and you know
04:33
coordinating with my authors so a lot of
04:35
time
04:36
honestly spent emailing it and that you
04:39
know face to face or like over the
04:42
Internet collaboration to make things
04:44
happen and then I went and I researched
04:51
on how to start this YouTube channel
04:52
which I've been trying to do for a long
04:54
time and I really don't know anything
04:55
about what I'm doing at all but you know
04:59
sure I'll try it
05:02
so that spent the last few hours with
05:05
that and then after this I have to go
05:09
and work on my own personal work now
05:11
that I've got to finish my business work
05:13
for the day I have a book coming out
05:17
into the wilds guy that I collaborated
05:20
with hey Rachel May and there's a little
05:24
bit of a problem with it I'm super
05:26
excited for it as a folk and as a
05:28
project to share with you guys but I
05:31
went and I shot this film and I did I
05:35
shoot a large amount of film I should
05:38
photography all the time and so I really
05:41
have to budget as a creative you know
05:45
already with the cheapest possible scams
05:48
we're looking at like 15 dollars a roll
05:50
if we count the cost of the film the
05:52
processing and the scanning and I I do
05:56
know how to do those things by myself
05:58
and I do have a nice scanner but I just
06:01
don't have the time so you know when I
06:04
go and I shoot 10 rolls of film for a
06:07
project you know that's a hundred and
06:09
fifty dollars just there and blowing on
06:11
one day on film
06:13
so I went and I actually found a
06:18
one-hour photo believe they're not in
06:20
2019 right near us so I went and I got I
06:25
drove there a couple weeks ago and I
06:27
caught film process there and scan there
06:29
and the scans are very low resolution
06:32
and because this is something that you
06:35
deal a lot with
06:37
with any type of film especially
06:40
whenever you're photographing during
06:41
sunsets even necessarily in digital the
06:45
color balance isn't quite right and the
06:47
machines don't read it because they
06:48
don't expect the scene to be so orange
06:51
and so read it so yellow and so what
06:54
happens is all of these photos in this
06:57
book are like really really cyan and so
07:02
I'm gonna go in by hand over the next
07:05
few days and color edit every single
07:10
photo and to make it look good in the
07:12
book here and so that's really not
07:16
something that you can do in batches I
07:20
mean sometimes if you have all the same
07:22
thing but I use kind of the point of
07:24
that book as having so many different
07:26
lighting situations and poses and and
07:29
facial expressions like clashed against
07:31
each other so every single one has to be
07:35
done by hand and I'm you know it's not
07:40
something you can just like pump into a
07:41
light room for there so like that so
07:44
that's I was up late last night doing
07:46
that and I'm gonna keep doing that and
07:48
I'll finish it sometime this week again
07:50
I want to have this book ready and
07:52
ordered and hear from the printer before
07:56
the fair in like two weeks less than so
08:01
that's really what I'm up to today I
08:03
also did some other stuff with Instagram
08:08
and that's that's really the today was a
08:11
pre chill day I mean I left a lot of
08:12
space in my schedule to figure out
08:15
YouTube I guess this is my very first
08:19
youtube video so we'll see how that goes
08:22
we'll see but let me know if you like
08:25
this let me know if you want to see more
08:27
I have a lot of insects that I want to
08:29
share with you guys a lot of things that
08:31
I think can provide value to you and if
08:35
you have any questions just be sure to
08:37
LIKE and subscribe I promise to not be
08:40
one of those people that like starts a
08:42
YouTube and then never posts again I
08:44
have a lot of content that I'm making
08:46
and thank you so much have a great day
